Sonia
Lopez is co-founder and director of Body Evolutions in Campbell.
She is a certified
Pilates
and Gyrotonic® personal
trainer. Her expertise in Pilates and Gyrotonic® spans over
fourteen
years when she began studying Pilates and Gyrotonic® as a student back
in 1994 to compliment her career as a professional ballroom dance
competitor.
"The first time I experienced Pilates and Gyrotonic® I knew I had to teach
these systems and share how strong, flexible and empowered you feel at
the end of the workout. They were beyond anything I'd ever
experienced in a fitness program", Sonia says.
A former Professional Dance Sport competitor and teacher Sonia now pursues
her new passion full time. It is because of her personal history
in dancing that she became convinced of the importance of organic
movement balanced with a pain free, flexible body and a strong "core".
Sonia originally
moved to the Bay Area from Los Angeles to teach and dance Ballroom
competitively. She soon found herself working with the Dance Sport
community imparting her knowledge in Pilates and the
Gyrotonic®. In 1998, Sonia and her husband Chris opened their first
Pilates
and
Gyrotonic®
studio inside the
San Jose DanceSport Center.
Later that year Sonia
gave birth to a baby boy, Luis-Fernando. She credits Pilates and
Gyrotonic® in preparing her for childbirth and helping her get back into
shape after the birth of her son. "After gaining over 60 pounds and 21
hours of labor you feel slightly disconnected from your body.
Having been a dancer for most of my life this was a foreign feeling and
something I quickly wanted to get past. With the help of Pilates
and Gyrotonic® I was able to strengthen my pelvic floor and abdominals
and reconnect to my body and now I feel stronger then ever. At age
41 Sonia gave birth to her second boy Antonio-Lucian giving her the
experience of pregnancy at a later age. This
experience humbled me and made me a better teacher as I am now able to
understand how other women feel after having children, something I had
no clue about before my children".
To this day Sonia continues to expand her
knowledge and pursue all educational resources in therapeutic exercise,
movement re-education techniques and advanced studies in Gyrotonic®
and
Pilates.
