Universal
Reformer
The
Joseph Pilates method is
practiced through the use of spring resistant machines and through a
series of floor exercises designed to use the body's power center.
Private,
semi-private or
small mat/floor classes are offered.
The
Pilates
Universal Reformer is a specially designed piece of equipment. The
apparatus
uses a
bed-like platform, that slides
along
tracks by pushing against the bar or pulling on the straps with the
arms or legs.
It is attached to
a number of tensioned springs that offer a gentle resistance,
allowing the student to work on alignment while correcting muscular
imbalances. Performed slowly, these efficient, highly controlled
movements engage the entire body.
The
program begins with bar work, strengthening the ankles, inner thighs,
hamstrings and buttocks. We then move onto strap work, strengthening
and stabilizing the shoulder girdle in preparation for core-abdominal
and back work, while simultaneously coordinating movement of the limbs.
The body is now ready to move into leg movements
in the straps creating awareness of a keeping our pelvis and torso
steady while mobilizing the legs with first small and then slowly
graduating into larger movements.
Breathing is an essential part of the system and is synchronized with
the movements. Using fewer repetitions than other forms of exercise,
and complete focus of movement and breath, this method leads to increased
body awareness and improved posture and alignment. The movements are
performed in supine, sitting, kneeling or standing positions.
