Juliu Horvath,
a Hungarian raised in Romania, began his professional career as a ballet
dancer, after competing for years as a gymnast and swimmer. He defected
to the United States in the late 1960s, giving up dancing to pursue the
study of .
It did not
take Juliu long to discover that he could successfully combine key movement
principles of all these disciplines -- swimming, gymnastics,
, and dance -- into one system, and created his first machine, the
Gyrotonic Handle Unit. A truly innovative piece of work, it was designed
to develop the inner strength necessary to perform his moving . By
moving through several patterns with the light resistance of the Pulley
Tower, the exerciser can develop integration and mutually supporting action
in all the major muscle groups.
Over the
years, Juliu has designed several other
machines that facilitate total
freedom of movement and tempo of exercise so that the body can focus on
coordination, strength and flexibility. Although originally designed for
dancers who benefit from the broader range of motion that these machines
provide, Gyrotonic®
works for anyone wishing to
gain strength, flexibility, and coordination.
